I never write about political topics, I never do. I don’t like writing about race and racism because it’s all over now and were supposed to be moving on, but now I’m angry, I’m very angry - here is living proof that racism still exists and people aren’t even trying in the slightest to hide it. In a recent article that I read on Press Association Online, researchers where investigating racial discriminations in the workplace. The researchers made thousands of phony CV’s and sent them to numerous organisations for their recruitment processes. The three fake identities - Nazia Mahmood, Mariam Namagembe and Alison Taylor - were all given similar experience and qualifications. The result?
The white candidate had to send in nine applications before an organisation requested an interview, in contrast to this response, the other candidates had reached sixteen applications before they were offered a similar response. Here it is, in black and white, the applicants all had very similar experiences and qualifications. Then what was it that made one candidate receive more attention from corporations than the others? The answer: the different colours of our skin. There was no other evidence, other than the difference of their complexion that might have made a difference in the selection process.
Employment minister Jim Knight said: "This research clearly shows that some employers are discriminating when it comes to choosing staff. This has no place in a modern society and racial discrimination cannot be allowed to continue." http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5ijBP1mlvd9ZNJ2R6XJ-IF5q1tyPQ

The story featured on the news site News24.com features a follow-up story about the tragic outcome of the child. At 8.53am today, a male child was reported to have been ‘washed away’ while playing near the Klipspruit River, Johannesburg. Emergency services confirmed that the boy went missing at about 18:00 on Sunday while playing with a friend near the Klipspruit River crossing in Eldorado Park's Extension 9.
The follow up to this story was “Body of missing boy found’, reported at 10.43am.”The body was found just 150m from where the boy had played," said spokesperson Nana Radebe reported by news24.com
The headlines for both these stories are short, to the point and direct; using nouns and verbs to direct the reader’s attention to the problem at hand. The headlines also lay out the entire story for the readers as both the headline and the articles are relatively short.
I chose this story because not only did it have a message about the lack of parental care, it also shows the sad, daily occurrences of some communities.
